You track your HRV religiously. You know the exact temperature and duration for optimal norepinephrine release. You’ve probably read three separate studies on cold exposure and brown fat activation. So why are you tossing pool chemicals into your plunge tank without giving it a second thought?

Here’s a question almost nobody in the cold exposure world is asking: what’s actually living in your water, and is your algae control method quietly undermining the very adaptation you’re chasing?

Pool Chemistry Doesn’t Translate Here

Walk into any pool supply store and mention you own an ice bath, and you’ll walk out with chlorine tablets. Seems logical-chlorine kills algae in pools, so it should work the same way in your plunge tank.

Except your ice bath isn’t a pool, and treating it like one is where things start going sideways.

Pools hold thousands of gallons with constant circulation and dilution built in. Your plunge tank? Maybe 200 to 400 gallons, minimal turnover, and you’re stepping into it almost daily-often right after a training session when your skin barrier is already compromised, your pores are dilated from vasodilation, and you might have small abrasions from lifting.

That’s a fundamentally different exposure pattern, and pool math doesn’t account for it. Most people eyeball their chlorine dosing based on vague “pool feel,” and concentration errors of 3-5x aren’t rare. Pair that with poor circulation and minimal water exchange, and you end up with chloramine buildup-the same sharp smell you associate with public pools, except now it’s off-gassing directly into your face while you’re doing breathwork.

The Confound Nobody’s Talking About

This is where it gets genuinely interesting.

Cold water immersion already triggers a specific, well-documented stress cascade: transient cortisol spike, norepinephrine surge, brown fat activation. That’s the entire point of the practice-controlled hormetic stress that drives long-term adaptation.

But here’s the thing: chloramine exposure triggers a stress response too. Respiratory irritation. Airway inflammation. A completely separate physiological signal that has nothing to do with cold adaptation and everything to do with your body reacting to a chemical irritant.

The problem is your body can’t distinguish between the two, and neither can your wearable. You might be logging “cold exposure training” data when what actually happened was cold exposure plus low-grade chemical irritation. Some athletes report worse post-plunge HRV recovery after chlorinated sessions compared to UV-treated or ionized water. Anecdotal, sure-but it lines up with what we already know about chloramine’s inflammatory effects on airway tissue.

Translation: you might be capping your own recovery gains with a variable you never thought to question.

For daily users with decent filtration, this combo is becoming something of a new standard-way less chemical load while still maintaining sanitation between cycles.

Hydrogen Peroxide Systems

Breaks down into water and oxygen, which is appealing from a “what am I actually exposing myself to” standpoint. The tradeoff is it’s weaker against established biofilm than chlorine or copper-silver, so it works best paired with weekly draining and scrubbing rather than trying to maintain water for weeks at a time.

The Real Enemy Isn’t Algae

Algae is just your visible alarm bell. The actual concern is biofilm-a bacterial matrix that forms on your tub walls and chiller components long before you ever see a hint of green in the water.

Biofilm harbors organisms that standard algae control doesn’t touch, and it’s the real source behind skin issues like folliculitis (and worse, for anyone immunocompromised). Here’s the part that surprises people: no sanitizer, whether it’s chlorine, copper-silver, or UV, fully penetrates established biofilm chemically.

The fix is unglamorous but non-negotiable: weekly mechanical scrubbing with a soft brush. This physically breaks apart the biofilm matrix before it becomes resistant to whatever system you’re running. Skip this step, and you’re fighting a losing battle no matter which sanitizer you picked.

A Simple Maintenance Protocol

If you’re plunging four or more times a week, here’s what I’d actually put in place:

  1. Run copper-silver ionization as your primary system.
  2. Brush down the tub walls and accessible components once a week, no exceptions.
  3. Test pH and ORP (oxidation-reduction potential) twice weekly, targeting 650-750mV.
